Joey Thurman:
A once in a lifetime team, the Metea Girls High School Volleyball team are state champions. The first ever in Metea Valley High School history. They banded together, with diversity, they became champions. Here's the Metea Valley Girls High School Championship team. Coach MacDonald, state champ, congratulations.

Coach MacDonald:
Thank you. Thank you very much.

Joey Thurman:
Did you guys have state championship aspirations or was this something that sort of crescendo towards the end?

Coach MacDonald:
Yeah, we talked about it in our tryouts and had thoughts of it, and what it took to be a state championship type caliber team.

Joey Thurman:
Yeah.

Coach MacDonald:
But in the back of my mind, we had such a rich volleyball area. You never know what the other programs are going to be alike around here. Especially with like Naval North and Neuqua, and schools like that, the St. Charles and everything, and who we're going to see in the regionals, sectional, stuff like that. But we knew we had a special team. It just you didn't know how special it was until, I mean, really until that final point happened on the 13th of November, you didn't know how special this group was.

Joey Thurman:
Did you ever think when the season started that you guys would take it this far?

Emma Bludgen:
Honestly, probably not. Everyone was like, "Oh, we're going to win." And I was like, "Okay, we'll see." And then after the first five games, I was like, "Okay, like we can do it."

Joey Thurman:
Now, when you guys were on your championship run, what was the feeling from the beginning of the season? Towards the end with the team.

Kira Hutson:
At the beginning of the season, it was more just getting that pce championship first, because you can't win state without getting that really. So we just try to take it one step at a time, even from game one and as it progressed, it just got better and better. And we just used that confidence in the state championship game.

Joey Thurman:
Now, when you're walking around the school, you guys feel like that you're a little bit more known now and you're like, "Hey, you are on the volleyball team." Or what's it feel like?

Emily Kozinski:
It definitely feels special. I walk around the hallways and we're wearing like our state champ shirts and it's just so special. And we're wearing these state qualifiers sweatshirts. And I don't know, it's just crazy just walking in the hallways and looking at your classmates and you're being like, "Oh, they know I have won state." It's just, I don't even know how to have words for it.

Joey Thurman:
Well, there was a quote that they said, "It's a once in a life time team." Do you agree with that?

Rachel Bostick:
I agree. I mean, if you've met the girls, they're incredible. They're great kids. They're a part of the building. Coach MacDonald is the hype man for this team. It's pretty awesome. It's been a really cool experience.
