Sarah Baker:
Welcome back to Talking Cities Oswego. Today, I'm here with Alan Langguth from Wine on the Fox happening in Oswego, Mother's Day weekend, May 7th and 8th, free for everybody to attend. But what we really want to know is what's the proper way to taste test and sample wines. But before we do that, let's talk a little bit about the different types of wines we have. There's over a hundred wines this year, all from Illinois.
Alan Langguth:
That's right. So the wines that we're featuring today on the table here are all sweet wines, but they are going to have wines all the way from dry or low style wines all the way on up to sweet dessert style wines.
Sarah Baker:
Wow.
Alan Langguth:
The first, the wine that we are going to taste here, is from Fox Valley Winery.
Sarah Baker:
Interesting.
Alan Langguth:
Called Their Corruption. It's a red, sweet wine. And so in a tasting, you're going to get a one ounce pour. These are the glasses that they're using this year, which are nice because they're actual glass and not plastic.
Sarah Baker:
Very nice.
Alan Langguth:
So the ideal thing is to swirl it around.
Sarah Baker:
Start with a swirl, okay.
Alan Langguth:
Start with a swirl. Check the color.
Sarah Baker:
Oh.
Alan Langguth:
You don't want any off color. Especially in a red wine, you don't want it to look brown.
Sarah Baker:
Okay.
Alan Langguth:
Okay. Nice and clear. Swirl it around.
Sarah Baker:
And then you give it a good whiff.
Alan Langguth:
Give it a good whiff.
Sarah Baker:
Ooh. This one smells really good.
Alan Langguth:
Does it?
Sarah Baker:
Mm-hmm.
Alan Langguth:
Beautiful.
Sarah Baker:
Yep.
Alan Langguth:
Got some nice dark cherry-
Sarah Baker:
Yep. Smells very nice.
Alan Langguth:
-aromas in there. And then take just a small amount.
Sarah Baker:
Just a small sip. What? You're supposed to swish it around?
Alan Langguth:
Swirl it around.
Sarah Baker:
Oh, well I already failed there. I already just...
Alan Langguth:
Oh.
Sarah Baker:
I'm just drinking it.
Alan Langguth:
Yep. No. Swirl it around a little.
Sarah Baker:
You got to swish it? Okay.
Alan Langguth:
And it's just a small amount.
Sarah Baker:
Yummy.
Alan Langguth:
And then let it go down.
Sarah Baker:
Very exciting. Well, I don't know about you, but I will definitely be there Mother's Day weekend imbibing in all these wines. Man. I don't know how people are going to make it through every single wine if there's over a hundred.
Alan Langguth:
Well, usually what people do is they have a preconceived notion of what they like in a wine and they'll walk up to the table and they can pick out, they can say, "Well, I sort of like this style of wine or that style of wine," whether it's a pinot grigio or Chardonnay or a Riesling, whatever. And then the people behind the table can say, "Well, how about trying this one? Or how about trying that one?"
Sarah Baker:
Got it. So it helps narrow it all down.
Alan Langguth:
Narrow it down a little bit. You can ask your friends or ask people that have already sampled some of them, "What did you think of that one?" type of thing.
Sarah Baker:
Definitely.
Alan Langguth:
And so that you know, because no one's going to sample all hundred wines.
Sarah Baker:
Of course. Well, Alan, thank you so much for joining us today in Talking Cities and we will see you all at Wine on the Fox, Mother's Day weekend.
